Dealing with the memory leak/Crash to desktop Empty Dealing with the memory leak/Crash to desktop

So I was sad to realise that the memory problem with The Guild 2 is still present. Basically what I think happens to most people is that after playing for a while (especially on maps with 3 or 4 cities) is that the RAM usage increases until it crashes to desktop or freezes up. I am simply astonished that this hasn't been fixed after over 4 installations of this game.

Now I know there is currently no patch out to adress this. But is there anything anyone knows that can be done about it? Some option to decrease? ini file to edit? Fan-made patch? Anything?

Solved it!!

The problem only occurs for people who have 32bit systems running 2GB of RAM (or less)

The issue is that 32bit systems don't allow the system to give a process more than 2GB of Ram (with or without a page file) This means that the crash many of us get when saving a game (particular on new round) is because the memory requirement spikes for a short period of time, but since it can't go above 2GB it will just crash or freeze up instead. This can be fixed by editing the boot.ini to use more than 2GB for one process (thus letting it access the virutal memory as well). It's all well explained here:

Thanks for sharing this as it fixed my crashes/lag as well. Although my RAM is 3gb it seemed to work for me too.

Your welcome, nice to know it helped. Yeah that makes sense as even if you have 3gb, if you are on a 32bit system you will still not be able to allocate more than 2gb to a single process.

A note however: I recently found that this fix may affect other games in a negative way. For example Starcraft 2 does not like this at all and will get weird memory problems a short way into the game and even crash. If you plan on playing other games I suggest you revert to your default settings (just backtrack through the guide)
